The Switch Out program is coming to an end

Please return all pails before October 31, 2018.

We regret to inform you that the award-winning Switch Out program is coming to an end. Since 2001, Switch Out has been dedicated to removing, collecting and managing mercury-containing convenience lighting switches and anti-lock braking system (ABS) sensor modules from end-of-life vehicles in Canada. We have some important information to share with you before the program concludes.

Final Collection Sweep

Thanks to the generosity of the Canadian Steel Producers Association (CSPA), Schnitzer Steel Canada Ltd. and Algoma we are able to carry out one last collection sweep. We will not preemptively send out new pails, but you can contact us to request one if needed. This will be the final collection sweep for the Switch Out program, so please ensure that you return any pails, waybills or mercury switches you have on-site by October 31, 2018. Your company will be billed for any late returns.

What’s next?

Even though Switch Out is ending, the proper management of mercury-containing switches is extremely important. We strongly encourage you to continue to check any older model vehicles for switches in order to keep mercury out of the environment.

If you find any mercury switches after the program ends, you can request a pail and arrange to have your switches recycled by the hazardous waste management specialists at Aevitas. Please note that any shipping and recycling costs will need to be paid by your company.

Thank You!

Thanks to the hard work and dedication of our 1000+ participants, Switch Out has responsibly managed over 750,000 mercury switches. We are very proud of the positive impact this has made in keeping mercury out of the environment and extend a heartfelt thank you to our participants, supporters and funders.

Please continue to check for switches, and remember that every switch counts!
